B21: 'ROAR' by Cecelia Ahern, Book Review

I usually start my blogs with quotes, either something related to the topic or some lines from the book I am reviewing. But I couldn’t decide on one for the book ROAR, by Cecelia Ahern as the thirty stories, the thirty women, and the lines in this book are all worth the highlight.

BASIC INFORMATION:

The book “ROAR” by Cecelia Ahern is a compilation of thirty stories and thirty women. To date Cecelia Ahern has published 18 novels; PS I Love You, Where Rainbows End, If You Could See Me Now, A Place Called Here, Thanks for the Memories, The Gift, The Book of Tomorrow, The Time of My Life, One Hundred Names, How To Fall in Love, The Year I Met You, The Marble Collector, Flawed, Perfect, Lyrebird, ROAR, Postscript and Freckles, ROAR being her 16th one. ROAR is a book of 337 pages with thirty chapters (stories). It costed me Rs. 450 with a 10% discount but you can expect depreciated amount from bookstores or websites. ROAR is now streaming on Apple TV+.

PLOT SUMMARY:

There are thirty chapters; each chapter has a different story about a different woman. These chapters cover almost every aspect of a woman’s life. You will find stories where how women oversee each other is described, how women are labeled, how women struggle with different social issues, how a woman fights daily, and how it is important to make good choices. Stories about Women from different religions, sexual orientations, countries, occupations, and cultures are involved. The book covered from showing women as weak and struggling and confused to how some women are so confident and determined. There is a chapter where women who walked in their husband’s shoes described men’s point of view making the book not so feminist.

As there are thirty short stories, a proper plot summary would spoil it for the readers. But you can trust me to read this book as it will take you across the lines: “…Because the heart doesn’t need doors, it needs protection.”, “…if I am not me, then who do you think I should be?”, “Almost is good, but not quite”, and many more that will give you goosebumps.

MY COMMENTS/VIEWS:

The book and the stories are witty, inspiring, smart, sharp, clever, and very eye-opening. I bought this book because of Cecelia Ahern’s writings and the pretty book cover but little did I know that this book will be a source of inspiration and motivation to me in my difficult times. Yes, the book is based on women so a woman will enjoy reading it and get inspired but for others as well this book can be a real ice breaker in understanding women and broadening their thinking.

The book doesn’t only talk about the misery of women so it is easy for everyone to relate and take good learning from it. The book is very smartly written, it is fictional and very imaginative yet realistic, the book is filled with metaphors, and at some points and paragraphs you might feel like the content just went over your head but reading it again with an open mind and a philosophical but real life approach will make you understand how deep but simple this book is. It does get a bit boring and difficult to read in the middle, maybe because of critical comprehension of the context or because sometimes it just makes you sad to read it. But it can definitely be called under self-help book.

The book doesn’t just gives speech or makes philosophical statements but it makes you understand those things with witty stories. I personally liked this book because it seems similar to my old blogs. Cecelia Ahern is an exceptional writer, her books and stories always have a different way of storytelling which intrigues the reader.

RECOMMENDATION:

‘ROAR’ by Cecelia Ahern is a must-read! It is worth the price and you definitely want to have this pretty book in your bookshelf. It is a book promoting sisterhood and 337 pages of motivation and positivity. As a line in the book goes, “Make good choices”, this book should be the first.
